Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) started to make their way into mainstream conversations a couple years ago and the industry is advancing quickly. The augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) market amounted to an estimated 12 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 and is expected to expand drastically in the coming years, with most optimistic forecasts for 2022 eclipsing 192 billion U.S. dollars (Source Statista). Keeping up with the terms and acronyms can be daunting task for non-experts. So first things first. ​
VR, AR, MR & XR

​VR immerses users in an entirely virtual world using headsets that provide realistic sounds, images or sensations to replicate a realistic environment or to create an imaginary world. AR exists on top of our own world, without interaction with the real world. It creates an overlay of virtual content. The worldwide popular game Pokémon Go is an excellent example of how AR can be implemented. MR (Mixed Reality) merges the real and virtual world. It creates an environment wherein virtual objects can interact with the physical world in real time. XR (eXtended Reality) can be defined as an umbrella which brings AR, VR and MR together under one term.
