Healthcare is certainly one of the most promising application domains for Virtual Reality. In the recent years, new solutions have emerged relying on virtual reality headsets to e.g. accelerate anatomy training for medical students, or help surgeons prepare for complex surgical procedures. What was missing until now was the ability to offer such experiences not only to individuals, but actually to grouped audiences, be it several students for grouped training, or medical staff during multi-disciplinary team meetings. For this purpose, a unique solution, applied to liver surgery , has been developed together with UZGent University Hospital, that allows multiple people navigating within the same virtual environment or organ of a patient, with direct connection to the CT scan data and other radiologic images. More to learn soon as the results of the medical study currently conducted in several European hospitals will become public ! Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) started to make their way into mainstream conversations a couple years ago and the industry is advancing quickly. The augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) market amounted to an estimated 12 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 and is expected to expand drastically in the coming years, with most optimistic forecasts for 2022 eclipsing 192 billion U.S. dollars (Source Statista). Keeping up with the terms and acronyms can be daunting task for non-experts. So first things first.
